Saved My Soul – song by CityAlight
There should be no self-professing Christian walking around saying or thinking that they’re a Christian simply because Christianity is true, even though it is. No Christian should claim that they’re a Christian because it’s the most logical conclusion or it makes the most sense. No Christian should make any claim of ownership when it comes to their decision to follow Christ.
No. EVERY Christian is only a Christian because they were wandering aimlessly, chained to the evil of this world, and then the Spirit of God revealed to them the beauty and goodness that was embodied in Jesus Christ, and their eyes were opened. And then they couldn’t ignore it. And they follow Jesus now because he saved their soul and is worthy of their life dedicated to him.
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:1–10 ESV)
That’s why we sing songs like “Saved My Soul.” As we gather, we should always be reminding ourselves that we were saved—that we were rescued. Should that not incite some sort of a response on Sunday mornings? I’m not saying you need to run up and down the aisle, but I am saying that if you can’t even muster up energy to sing to God, how are you going to give your life to him?
Don’t misread me. I don’t hold the belief that if you don’t emphatically sing the songs on Sunday morning that this somehow means you’re not a dedicated Christ follower. But with a knowledge like this one, that we were graciously snatched away from the path that leads to death, then should we not see a more fervent spirit among the believers that gather on Sunday mornings?
And shouldn’t that passion come through, at least a little bit, while we sing truthful realities of our rescuing and of our Lord?
We shouldn’t fake it. But if you’re a proclaiming Christ follower, ask yourself: do I truly understand and fully comprehend how I’ve been saved? And if so, does this reality fuel my passion to fully follow Christ with all the vitality I am given? For he saved my soul, and now I am to give him my everything.
